Vans US Open of Surfing

For the 2022 US Open of Surfing, we created a concept to raise awareness for cleaner beaches and oceans, “Leave the beach better than you find it”. This concept informed the entire event, from the artwork to the experience on the sand. And funny story, it was developed in 2020 but due to the pandemic the event was postponed till 2022.

The event artwork was made by canotype printing trash we collected during a beach clean up Vans hosted in Huntington Beach, Ca. The retail tent brought this theme to life through up-cycled artworks made by local artists, Vans VR3 product storytelling, and an interactive product customization experience. Art installations of up-cycled trash, environmental education and workshops were also featured around the event site. Plus all the other fun things to do at the event: surfboarding shaping, music, skateboarding. Oh yeah, and the surf contest.

Vans US Open of Surfing 2019

The goal for the 2019 US Open of Surfing was to bring the new (at the time) Vans Surf category positioning of “cultural progression through to radical experimentation” to life. As an experiment, we worked with the Vans Surf team to create the all art. We asked them to draw their interpretation of a few key branding elements, then we collaged them together in a unique way. Luckily our experiment worked and we created a truly unique visually approach to the event. Different from any year before.

This approach of involving the surfers drove more unique thinking: Surfer lead art classes, other athlete art installations, and a unique customization experience, where you could have any of the this art put a shirt or pair of shoes. We pushed this art even further by having it brought to life through animated AR SnapChatlens that recoginized the art on any surface.

We didn’t send a photographer. Sorry these are all other peoples images. But they show off the event. 😀️
